Your documents for German citizenship
Naturalization is the process through which you obtain German citizenship and with it key rights such as the right to vote, unrestricted freedom of movement in the EU and a German passport. A prerequisite for this is the submission of various official documents that prove your identity, residence status and integration. Since many of these documents were originally issued in another language, a certified translation into German is the only way for them to be accepted by German authorities.
The path to naturalization includes:
- Checking the requirements: e.g. 8 years of lawful residence (in some cases less), secure livelihood, language skills
- Collecting the required documents: including certified translations of all foreign-language documents
- Naturalization application: submitting all documents to the competent authority
- Naturalization test: proof of knowledge of the German legal and social system
- Release from previous citizenship: depending on the country of origin (in many cases dual citizenship is possible)
- Naturalization assurance and naturalization certificate: formal granting of German citizenship
Many of these documents must – if they are not already in German – be submitted with a certified translation. Only then can the German authorities correctly understand and assess the information.
| Document | Why it matters | Our service |
|---|---|---|
| Birth certificate | Fundamental proof of identity | Complete translation incl. all seals and stamps |
| Marriage certificate | Proof of marital status | Legally compliant translation of all names and dates |
| Certificate of good conduct | Proof of a clean criminal record | Precise translation of legal terminology |
| School reports/diplomas | Proof of education | Professional translation of degrees and grades |
| Language certificates | Proof of German language skills | Accurate translation of language levels |
| Divorce decree | For divorced applicants | Legally precise terminology |
| Death certificate of spouse | For widowed applicants | Sensitive and precise translation |
| Pension notice | Proof of financial security, e.g. for older applicants | Complete translation incl. amounts, stamps and notes |
Less obvious documents such as a registration certificate or custody documents may also be required in the naturalization process – for example if you are naturalizing with children or have to prove your place of residence. For these documents to be accepted by the authority, a certified translation is required.
For naturalization in Germany, in addition to submitting official documents, passing the naturalization test is also required. This test checks your knowledge of the German legal and social system as well as living conditions in Germany. It consists of 33 questions, of which at least 17 must be answered correctly. For naturalization it is also necessary that all documents submitted are in German. To prepare for naturalization, you can practise the test online in advance – on the official website of the Federal Government you will find a sample test.
Typical questions asked in the naturalization test:
-
Who elects the Federal Chancellor?
→ The Bundestag (German federal parliament) -
Which of the following is not a state power in Germany?
→ The press (the three powers are: legislative, executive, judiciary) -
What happened on 9 November 1989 in Germany?
→ The Berlin Wall fell. -
Which German city used to be divided?
→ Berlin -
What is written in the German constitution?
→ Human dignity is inviolable.
Why certified translations are so important for your naturalization
Naturalization is all about trust – the authorities must be able to rely on the authenticity of your documents. Certified translations play a key role here:
-
Legal requirement – for good reason: German authorities only accept documents in German or with a certified translation. This is not just bureaucracy. It ensures that all relevant information is understood correctly and that no important details are lost or misinterpreted.
-
Legally compliant for both sides: A certified translation is more than just a transfer of words. It is a legally valid document that accurately reflects the content of the original. The stamp and signature of the sworn translator confirm that the translation is complete and correct.
-
Faster processing of your case: The naturalization process takes time – that’s normal. But with correctly translated and certified documents, you avoid unnecessary delays caused by queries or requests for resubmission. Every document that is accepted the first time brings you a step closer to your goal.
-
Official recognition throughout Germany: Our certified translations are recognized by all German authorities and courts – from the registry office in Munich to the immigration office in Hamburg. You can submit them to any German authority without hesitation.
A common mistake: many applicants try to save money by translating documents themselves or using non-sworn translators. The result is that the entire process is delayed by weeks or even months.

Why customers trust us
What our customers say about their experience:
"When I saw the list of required documents for my naturalization, I was overwhelmed. I needed several translated documents from my home country for the process. The ordering process was pleasantly simple, the price fair and the quality excellent. I especially appreciated the personal advice beforehand – I wasn’t sure whether all my documents had to be translated and received a quick and competent answer. All documents were accepted by the immigration authority without any issues." Ahmed S., Berlin ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"The express option saved me! I was just about to take my naturalization test and realized that my language certificate still needed to be translated. I urgently needed a certified translation and thanks to the 24-hour service I actually had it in my inbox the next day. The printed version arrived two days later – just in time for my appointment. Customer service was very understanding and really helped me in this stressful situation. Great service that I recommend without hesitation!" Elena M., Hamburg ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"After a bad experience with a local translation office whose translation was rejected by the registry office, I turned to this service. The difference was obvious: the documents were delivered faster, were professionally formatted and – most importantly – were accepted by the authority without any problems. The price was even lower than for the first attempt. If I had known that earlier, I would have saved myself a lot of time and nerves." Thomas L., Cologne ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Frequently asked questions about naturalization
Do I have to submit the original documents?
For the translation, a clearly legible copy or scan of your document is sufficient. This way, your valuable originals remain safely in your possession.
How long does it take to translate naturalization documents?
Time is an important factor in the naturalization process. As standard, you receive the PDF file of your certified translation within 3–4 working days by email. The printed version with original stamp and signature is delivered by post within 5–6 working days. For particularly urgent cases, we offer an express service for selected language combinations (English, Spanish, Italian) with delivery of the PDF version within 24 hours – ideal if deadlines are approaching or you want to complete your application quickly.
Are your translations recognized in all federal states?
Yes, our translations are recognized by all German authorities and courts nationwide. This applies to immigration authorities, registry offices, youth welfare offices, courts and all other official bodies.
Can I have several documents translated at the same time?
Absolutely – and that’s even recommended! You usually need several translated documents for naturalization. You can upload all required documents in a single order – but please upload each document separately and specify the corresponding number of pages. This allows us to process and certify each document individually.
Which languages do you offer for naturalization documents?
With our network of sworn translators, we cover many language combinations. One of the two languages must always be German. The most frequently requested language combinations in the context of naturalization are:
- English – German
- Turkish – German
- Arabic – German
- Russian – German
- Polish – German
- Italian – German
- Spanish – German
- French – German
If you need a language combination that is not part of our standard portfolio, please contact us directly. For rarer languages, we can often offer individual solutions.
Are stamps and seals translated as well?
Yes, all relevant elements of the original document – including stamps, seals and official notes – are included in the certified translation. The sworn translator indicates whether it is a seal, a stamp or a handwritten signature.
