When do you need a certified translation of your diploma supplement?
The diploma supplement is a standardised additional document to your university degree, introduced as part of the Bologna Process. It makes your qualifications internationally understandable and comparable. In many situations, a certified translation is required:
Master’s degree and postgraduate programmes abroad
Applications for master’s programmes: Foreign universities require a certified translation of your bachelor diploma supplement when applying for master’s programmes. This document shows in detail your course content, ECTS credits and specialisations and enables the admissions committee to assess your qualification precisely.
PhD applications: For admission to doctoral programmes abroad, you usually need certified translations of both your master’s diploma supplement and, in many cases, your bachelor supplement. These documents prove the academic depth of your previous education.
Professional recognition and job search abroad
Recognition of regulated professions: In many countries, university degrees for regulated professions (engineers, teachers, healthcare professionals, etc.) must be officially recognised. Recognition bodies such as NARIC or the relevant professional chambers require certified translations of the diploma supplement to compare your qualification with national standards.
International job applications: Multinational companies and foreign employers often require certified translations of academic certificates. The diploma supplement is particularly valuable as it provides a detailed breakdown of the skills and knowledge you acquired during your studies.
Visa applications and residence permits
Work visas for skilled professionals: When applying for work visas for qualified professionals (e.g. EU Blue Card, H-1B visa for the USA, Skilled Worker Visa for the UK), immigration authorities require certified translations of all academic documents. The diploma supplement helps authorities classify your qualification and grant the appropriate visa.
Permanent residence and naturalisation: For permanent residence permits or naturalisation applications in many countries, certified translations of academic certificates are required to prove your educational level and integration.
Scholarships and funding programmes
International scholarship applications: Programmes such as DAAD, Fulbright, Erasmus Mundus or Rhodes Scholarships require certified translations of the diploma supplement. Selection committees must be able to accurately assess your academic performance and course content in order to decide on funding.
Research stays: For research grants and visiting scholar programmes, you need certified translations of your academic certificates to demonstrate your suitability for the research project.
International university transfer
Changing university abroad: If you want to transfer to a foreign university during your studies, you will need certified translations of your existing diploma supplement or transcript of records. The destination university must check which credits can be recognised.
Double degree programmes: For binational degree programmes with a double degree, both partner universities often require certified translations of academic documents in order to coordinate recognition.

Requirements for your diploma supplement
So that we can prepare your certified translation, your uploaded document must meet certain quality standards:
Scan quality and legibility
All text, grades and tables must be sharp and clearly legible. Avoid blurry scans or photos with shadows.
Complete pages
All pages of the diploma supplement must be fully visible, including margins. Cut-off headers or footers may lead to rejection.
Stamps and seals visible
The university seal and any stamps must be clearly recognisable. The signature of the president or dean must also be legible.
Accepted file formats
PDF (preferred), JPG, PNG. Maximum file size: 10 MB per document. For multiple pages, please upload as a single PDF.
Colour documents preferred
Colour scans make it easier to identify stamps and seals. Black-and-white copies are accepted but should have high contrast.
All pages required
The complete diploma supplement (usually 2–4 pages) must be translated. Single pages or excerpts are usually not accepted by universities.
Tip: Scan your diploma supplement at a minimum of 300 dpi in colour. This ensures that all details, especially seals and stamps, are clearly visible.

Frequently asked questions about translating diploma supplements
What is the difference between a diploma supplement and a certificate?
The certificate (or degree certificate) confirms your graduation and shows your overall grade. The diploma supplement is an additional document that describes in detail what you studied: course content, modules, ECTS credits, exams and how your degree is classified within the national education system.
For international applications, both documents usually need to be translated and certified, as they complement each other and give a complete picture of your qualifications.
How many pages does a diploma supplement usually have?
A diploma supplement typically comprises 2–4 pages, depending on the level of detail your university uses and the number of modules you have completed. Some universities issue shorter versions with 2 pages, while comprehensive supplements – especially for master’s degrees – can also be 5–6 pages long.
Price: As the price is calculated per page, you should check the total number of pages before ordering. All pages must be translated for official recognition.
Do I also need to have my transcript of records translated?
This depends on the requirements of the respective institution. The diploma supplement is a standardised document according to Bologna guidelines and is accepted by most European universities. The transcript of records is a detailed list of all modules and grades.
Some universities outside Europe are not familiar with the diploma supplement and instead request a transcript of records. Clarify with the target institution in advance which document is required. We provide certified translations of both document types.
How are academic degrees and technical terms translated?
Academic degrees such as “Bachelor of Science”, “Master of Arts” or “Diplom-Ingenieur” are translated according to international standards. German degree titles and subject terms are rendered precisely in the target language, with our translators using established academic terminology.
For terms without a direct equivalent, our sworn translators add explanatory footnotes so that foreign institutions fully understand the content. For example, “Staatsexamen” is translated and supplemented with an explanation of how it is classified within the German education system.
Are ECTS credits and grades converted?
No, ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System) and grades are kept in their original form and translated as such. Converting them into other grading systems (e.g. GPA) is not part of the translation, as this is an academic assessment that can only be carried out by recognition authorities.
If the original contains a grade conversion table, this will of course be translated as well. Many diploma supplements already include an ECTS grading table explaining the German grading system.
Will my certified translation be recognised internationally?
Yes – with our 100% acceptance guarantee. Our sworn translators are state-certified and their translations are accepted worldwide by universities, higher education institutions, authorities and employers.
For some countries (e.g. USA, China, India), you may additionally need an apostille or further legalisation. An apostille is a higher-level certification issued by a German authority confirming the authenticity of the translation. We are happy to advise you whether an apostille is required in your case and can obtain it for you.
How quickly will I receive my certified translation?
Standard processing: 3–4 working days after receipt of the order and payment confirmation. You will first receive the translation digitally by email, with the original hard copy including seal and signature sent in parallel by free postal delivery.
Express service: For urgent application deadlines, we offer express processing within 24–48 hours (depending on language combination and scope). The express surcharge varies by language and is displayed transparently before you place your order.
